Design That Respects the Subject
For a four-part series on Native American cultures, the design challenge was inseparable from the research challenge. Each module covered a distinct region — geography, economy, government, religion, and art — and needed to feel cohesive across all four parts so students could navigate the series intuitively.
I developed a UI visual language drawn directly from the subject matter, with consistent structural framing across each module so the student always knew where they were. I also had access to a rich archive of historical photography and art — material that required careful handling. Recent history has invented plenty of cruel and reductive depictions of these cultures. I made sure none of that made it into the work, triple-checking content and representation with the course writer at every stage.
It was a UI/UX challenge, a graphic design project, and a research assignment all at once. The kind of work that reminds you why the job matters.
